For Writing

Communication is the main link that connects people. This can be either verbal or written but out of these, written is always considered the best for they can be preserved and can stay for long. And another reason for this being the best is that they can be documented and the pages can be turned back for all reasons. Here at the heart of communication is typography. Typography, as all of us know is the art or skill of writing words legibly, neatly and in an understandable format so that it reaches the readers without a hitch. But is it necessary for all to follow this technique while writing? This is an important query to be answered but with an uncertainty, because this is not used by all the writers and hence we cannot obligate a part of the success of any writing to this technique.

Secrets of writing using typography

Typography is not that simple and easy as it might look for there are a lot of intricacies that a typographer should know and understand before using it in his work. Let`s now look at these rules and simple yet profound secrets about this art.

  • Learning the basics – if you feel and take typography to be simply an art that could be applied or inserted easily after the completion of your work, then you are rightly wrong. This is of course what people understand about this art. It is, in reality, a science as much as it is an art. The first and most important step in using typography is to know the basics. If you feel that you have understood this with just the placement and usage of the different alphabets and words then you are certainly wrong for it is not just this but there is a lot more about this art. There are a lot of styles of writing even an alphabet and all these are clearly explained in the dedicated blogs for typography. So if you wish to gain a mastery of this technique, then you need to take time for a simple typography glossary.
  • Letter spacing – this is something not very obvious when unnoticed and is an oblivious error by many writers. Generally, the different default font styles that are offered to us by the systems space the letters in a word automatically. The difference in the spacing is noticed only when you give a closer look. This might not be of great importance to you but some readers might get disturbed with this slight indifference. Again this might not be a bottleneck when the words are knitted together in a paragraph style but is a problem when the words are less in number. For example, spacing problems in the headlines or the title of an article. Such issues can be easily rectified if proper typographical tools are used.
  • Font selection – this generally we apply the one we like for our writings. But do any of us realize that there is an inherent quality or meaning associated with each font style? Actually, there is and without knowing this we try to make our writings beautiful and attractive with the font that is close to our heart or the one that looks good to our eyes. In reality, people should understand that there is a mood, a feeling or a tone conveyed by each font and using the appropriate ones for the appropriate words would make the matter more effective and interesting. Getting to know this is possible only when you learn and understand typography fully and in-depth.
  • Alignment – another much-ignored part of typography. Generally, when we write something the text is aligned to the left. This is a default setting which might not suit all contents. The purpose of every different topic or article is different and hence requires to be placed and aligned properly without which the importance or significance of the text is lost. An improper alignment might also disturb the reader in the flow of words and meaning.

Size – this is another very important point for a write-up to catch the eyes of the reader. A text generally has titles, sub titles, and content. All of these will have to be delivered to the audience in the correct size which would convey the demarcations properly.
